Here is an interesting article on the constructeness of gender differences we often take for granted. It looks at all the myths about gender and language and why much of it does not stand up to scrutiny.
I can highly recommend the book.
Its an interesting debate. My view is there are fundamental differences between men and women. Women respond psycologically and physically, and are, as Faith Popcorn said ‘shopologically’ different to men. This is due to the fact that women have less dopamine and more serotonin than men. Women are much more tuned in to touch, smell, tone of voice & facial expressions. There are so many times when after an event or party, I have asked my husband a question like ‘Did you see the look on her face when he said that…’ and my husband stares at me blankly and shrugs his shoulders. Sometimes I am not sure if he would notice if I dyed my hair red and walked around the house naked. There any times when he really does speak a different language to me, not a superior or inferior one. Just different.
